US Homeland Security has suspended an annual green card lottery system, saying it was used by the suspected gunman in an attack in Rhode Island last week.
Two students were killed and nine injured in the shooting at Brown University.
The suspected attacker -- a Portuguese national with permanent residence in the US -- was found dead in Salem, New Hampshire, after almost a week's long manhunt.
