Turkiye is expanding its influence in Syria following Bashar al-Assad’s departure. with Syria's foreign minister Asaad al Shaibani is set to visit Turkiye, in his first official visit to the country.
Last month, the Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan led a delegation to Damascus and urged the lifting of sanctions.
Ankara has reopened its embassy in Damascus and pledged support for Syria’s governance, economy, and infrastructure. Experts highlight Turkiye’s potential to shape Syria’s future, leveraging ties with leaders, expertise, and partnerships with financiers like Qatar. However, challenges remain, including Turkiye’s strained economy, the Kurdish YPG issue, and balancing US and regional interests.
Syrian Refugees in Turkiye may play a key role in fostering ties between the nations.
