South Africa's government recently classified gender-based violence as a national disaster.
The United Nations says the rate of femicide, intentional killing with a gender-related motivation, is more than five times the global average.

Police statistics show more than 5,500 women were murdered in South Africa in a year.
That’s an average of 15 women killed every single day.
The rate of sexual violence and assault is also high.
More than 100 rapes are reported to the police daily and experts say the crime is underreported by as much as 95 percent.

Activists say the problem lies with poor implementation of legislation to protect women.
The case of 31-year-old Gaby Ndaba is one example.
She went missing in Johannesburg in May 2023.
Her body was discovered several days later, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Here’s her story, told by her sister.
