The long-negotiated EU–Mercosur trade deal has been delayed after key European countries failed to reach consensus. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni cited strong domestic opposition from farmers, saying concerns over agricultural competition were not addressed in the current text. France has also expressed reservations, while environmental groups warn the agreement is outdated and risks creating new problems rather than solving existing ones.
