Germany's upper house of Parliament is due to cast the final vote on proposed changes to the constitution, which would lift the strict debt brake on defence spending.
Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz wants to boost the military budget by more than one trillion dollars following years of under-investment in defence policy.
But his plan faces stiff opposition from both the far-right and far left.
