The UN’s rights chief, Volker Turk, has warned that the war has created an “extremely dangerous and unpredictable” situation.
“This conflict has an unprecedented power to ensnare countries across borders and around the world,” he said.
Turk said states in the Middle East were near “unmitigated catastrophe” as the fighting edges towards the one-month mark, having killed more than 2,000 people across the region and caused major global disruption to energy markets.
“The only guaranteed way to prevent this is to end the conflict, and I urge all states, and particularly those with influence, to do everything in their power to achieve this.”
